Welcome to Morgabriel

Morgabriel is home to the archbishop of Tür Abdin (Mountain of the Servants of God), the surrounding plateau. These days he presides over a much-diminished flock of around 70 people, the majority students from nearby villages.

The monastery's land continues to be threatened by ongoing legal claims from nearby villages – despite the monastery having been established for more than 1600 years. See the website of the World Council of Arameans (www.wca-ngo.org) for more information. (Search for 'Mor Gabriel'.)

From Midyat, take a Cizre minibus (TL8) to the signposted road junction and walk 2.5km uphill to the gate. Start early in the morning as minibuses become less frequent later in the day. A taxi is about TL80 return, including waiting time.
