Though the history of Battalgazi and Aslantepe, a few kilometres north, stretches back thousands of years, Malatya in its current location only dates from the late 1830s, when the Ottomans garrisoned Battalgazi (Old Malatya) against the invading Egyptian forces of Mohammed Ali. The Ottoman forces left much of the old city in ruins on their departure and its people built a new city on the site of their old summer houses.
