Welcome to Dara
About 30km southeast of Mardin is a magnificent ancient Roman city forgotten in time. Dating back to the 6th century, Dara (admission free) is where Mesopotamia's first dam and irrigation canals were built. Ongoing excavation promises to reveal one of southeastern Anatolia's forgotten gems. The highlight is walking down ancient stairways into the towers of Dara's underground aqueducts and cisterns. Natural light ebbs and flows into the expanse to create a remarkable cathedral-like ambience.
Bar a couple of teahouses, there are no facilities in Dara. From Mardin, there are three daily buses (TL5).
