Welcome to Bitlis
A castle dominates the town, and two ancient bridges span the stream. Make a beeline for the Ulu Cami (1126); the newer Şerefiye Camii dates from the 16th century. Other must-sees include the splendid İhlasiye Medrese (Quranic school), the most significant building in Bitlis, and the Gökmeydan Camii.
The İl Kültür Merkez has good maps of the city and brochures covering the area. It's housed inside the İhlasiye Medrese.
The Dideban Hotel is conveniently located about 100m from the minibus stand for Tatvan.
Try the excellent local bal (honey). Bitlis is also renowned for its büryan kebab (lamb baked in a pit and served with flat bread), usually served for breakfast and lunch.
Regular minibuses travel from Tatvan to Bitlis (TL5, 30 minutes).
