Welcome to Around Kastamonu
The countryside north of Kastamonu is Turkey's garlic-land with fields sprouting green tops right up to the town of Taşköprü which has a wealth of creaky Ottoman buildings in its centre and the sparse remains of the Roman city of Pompeiopolis just across the river. The ruins have yet to be excavated properly and are probably only of interest to those with archaeological credentials but there's a small museum displaying unearthed finds on site which you can view if the caretaker is there.
Further north is the hill town of Pınarbaşı, the main access point for the Küre Mountains. Although the mountains are part of a national park, trails into the park's forest are not well-maintained with some in serious states of degradation.
