Founded by the Arabs in the 7th century, Tunis existed solely within the medina walls for more than 1000 years and only extended its geographical boundaries in the 19th century. A maze of vaulted souqs, alleys lined with massive, brightly painted doors opening to lavishly tiled dars (mansions), and landmark mosques with distinctive octagonal minarets, it is deservedly a Unesco World Heritage site.
