It's fair to say that the Niua Group is off the beaten track by definition, but that goes double for Tafahi. Nine kilometres north of Niuatoputapu, the perfect 560m cone of this extinct volcano (population 100) rises up from the sea swells. On the right tide you can cross by boat from Niuatoputapu to Tafahi in the morning and return in the afternoon. It’s a good climb to the summit, from which on a good day you can see Samoa! Negotiate boat transfers with the local fishers if you're keen.
