Acclimatise in the cafes in Nuku’alofa, then see the sights around Tonga's main island of Tongatapu: take a day tour or hire a car. Jet north to Vava’u and explore this magical maze of islands, beaches, reefs and sheltered waterways. Some time hanging out with the yachties in the waterside bars and restaurants in Neiafu is a must. Fly back to Tongatapu the day before your flight out.
Throw in a visit to Ha’apai on your way back south from Vava’u. Lower than low-key, this is the place to be if you're really on the run from the stresses of life elsewhere. Sleep, read, eat, drink and strap on a snorkel at least once a day. Back on Tongatapu, fly out to nearby ’Eua, an emerging ecotourism destination which offers up hiking trails, rainforest and raucous birdlife.
Consider using ferries to chug between the islands to really change down into ‘Tonga time’. A stay out by the Ha’atafu Beach surf is a great family option on Tongatapu. Stretch out your stays in Vava’u, Ha’apai and on ’Eua (bring extra beach novels), or a trip to the Niua Group could even be on the cards.
