This summier I'm going to Dej (north of Cluj) and I started learning Romanian, but in a Dutch travel magazine I read that a lot of the people in Transsylvania are better in Hungarian than Romanian. Wich language should I learn?
im landing at otopeni airport at 10pm on a thursday night in late may but I am planning on heading straight to Brasov rather than spend time in Bucharest (ive been a couple of times so time for somewhere new). should i go straight to Brasov from the airport or head into Bucharest and sleep there the night before heading to Brasov?

During a trip through eastern europe this summer I would like to get from Bucharest to Varna/Burgas (Bulgaria) and then to Istanbul. I don't mind bus or train, but the cheapest option would be great. And would you guys recommend booking the ticket ahead to get a good price or can I just show up on the station and get a reasonably prized ticket.
Hope you can help!! :-)
I'm in the early stages of planning a Central Europe/Balkans Peninsula tour departing from Canada this August and one of the top items on my to-do list is to go hiking in the Fagaras Mountains in Romania. I'm particularly interested in spending a couple nights at the Balea Lake Chalet but am willing to entertain other options if this proves too far out of my way. I've read other threads on this subject and the impression I get is that, in the absence of a rental car, one is restricted…
Next week I'm taking the train from Bucharest to Craiova to visit friends living there. I'm a female travelling alone and wondered how safe the journey is alone and how safe Craiova is alone. I have heard and read mixed messages regarding the safety of the area and wondered if anyone has been recently who could give me an update.
Any help anyone could give would be much appreciated.
Hello! I’m planning a trip to Romania in July with my husband and 10 year old daughter, and am looking for advice on our itinerary. We have about 2 weeks. We plan on renting a car, and generally prefer basing ourselves in one place for a few days and taking day trips, when possible.
Day 5 – drive to Sighisoara, spend night
Day 6 – drive to Sibiu, 3 nights…
Hello again Thorn Tree Advisors! One more time I am asking for AND needing your travel advice. In May I am going to Bulgaria and Romania. Bulgaria is no problem, but Romania is. I will begin in Bucharest and wish to see the Wooden Churches of Maramures and some of the smaller villages in that area - also the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. The Lonely Planet Guide book is discouraging on public transportation to those areas. My options seems to be: use public transportation to the…
We're planning our next holiday in late June - early July and have booked flights to Bucharest and back from Budapest 2.5 weeks later.. Have put together a rough itinerary but not sure if it's too much/not enough so any advice appreciated.
We want to do around 3-4 days hiking on the trip but generally don't like staying a new place each night and would prefer to stay 2 - 3 nights in place and do day trips (e.g. Sibiu to Cindrel mountains). We'll be travelling by bus and train (and…
There are 8 of us meeting in Bucharest in late Sept. We will spend one day in Bucharest then rent a van at OTP and spend 3 days traveling in Transylvania. We need to spend the third night in Sinaia in order to get back to OTP the next day. It has been suggested that we drive from OTP to Sibiu via the entire Transfag Highway the first day. I am thinking this will take most of the day driving instead of spending the time visiting villages, churches and castles. I have read that it it…
