Yunnan and Sichuan destinations

Country forums / North-East Asia / China

Hello,
I need some help with must see destinations in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. I don't know if I will be able to aquire a guidebook before I get there but have a fairly decent map. I will be arriving from Laos and eventually heading to Tibet. Between these two destinations where should I go and what is there to see? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Also, any places to stay awhile and learn Tai Chi in English? Thanks so much.

I highly recommend Ngawa (Aba in Chinese) and Garze (Ganzi) Tibet Autonomous Prefectures in western and northern Sichuan. These regionsof greater Tibet are far better than most places in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Far higher percentages of Tibetans and much more Tibetan culture.

1

Sichuan: Jiuzhaigou and Chengdu.
Yunnan: Tiger Leaping Gorge, Zhongdian, Lijiang.
Cheers!

2

In central Sichuan: Chengdu, Qingcheng Shan
western Sichuan: Danba county (esp the villages of Buke and Zhonglu), Derge, Dzongsar, Pelpung

3

Oh yes, add Danba to my list of recommendations as well. Stay away from Hailuogou.
Cheers!

For some of the sites in Sichuan - Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou.... check out my blog at Living, Working and Traveling in China

Yunnan: the whole of Xishuanbanna, very convenient if coming up from Laos through Boten and Mengla. Jinghong, Lincang, Lancang, Baoshan, Ruili, then up to Dali and Tiger Leaping Gorge, Zhongdian, Lijiang.

To guenovnd: You often post and recommend your site; not that it matters to the OP, but you do realize that it's blocked in China?

theres a good route up thru yunnan and sichuan into qinghai from where you can get to tibet.
from zhongdian take the road thru litang to kanding, then northwest thru ganzi and serxu and madao to xining. mostly tibetan, with a central asian vibe around xining and golmud.
