According to my travel/medical consultation before our trip to Ethiopia, you don't need a Yellow Fever vacination for Ethiopia. They need to do a thorough walk-thru with you before administering all vaccinations and b/c yellow fever vacc has caused a number of fatalities over the last 10 years, unless you are visiting places at high risk to contract it, they should find no need to vacc you with yellow fever if you're only going to Ethiopia.

My boyfriend went to another consultation and they didn't do as thorough a job....they gave him the YF vacc.

Ethiopia is not high risk and has not had a YF case in 10 years or so, according to my travel doc.

My trip was December, '08.

My dr in the UK told me that it was neccesary in December 2007, maybe err on the side of caution then at least you'll have it next time you go to Africa as it lasts 10 years.

Ethiopia requires a certificate if you are arriving directly from an infected area. Infected areas are a countries in Africa & South America. The country you travel to after visiting Ethiopia may or may not require a certificate. because Ethiopia is itself considered infected. There are occasional outbreaks in Sudan, primarily do to the disruption sin souther Sudan and there is concern about YF moving into Ethiopia

Most experts advise the shot for your own protection, however, you may wish to consider where you will be & how long you will be there. YF in travelers is rare, but it can be fatal. If you will only be in areas where there is no malaria, you probably will be at minimal risk. (Little risk of malaria generally means mosquitos aren't able to survive the climate. )
