Which are the best regions to make your self-driving wine tour for 10 days (Spain/France/Italy)?

Thanks

A self driving wine tour for 10 days.... My licence would be shredded after 2.

1

Are we talking vineyards or bottleshops?

2

What batty said. And I would think it would depend on what kinds of wines you like. Maybe you should start with an at-home sampling of different countrys' wines first. Personally I would go to Germany if I could afford it, btw.

3

Only place we did a concerted visit to vineyards was Moselle Valley in Germany. There was some kind of festival on so we had lots of fun and lots of nice wine. Agree with #3 though, it depends on the wines that you like. Given the choice of anywhere in the world, I'd go to Aussie.

4

As someone said above - give us of an idea of what kind of wines you like first. No point in recommedning Alsace if you're after some decent cabernet sauvignon.

5

Ok. :)
I am from Portugal, so Douro Valley is out of question.

I personally prefer red wines with structure/full bodied style (if i'm translating well from Portuguese).
Because we want good food, nice places to drive and history my 1st idea was Italy (Tuscany).

And please the options should be in Europe (thanks).

6

Is Duero out of the question though?

Tuscany or Piedmont in Italy

Bordeaux in France - you have a fat wallet, right?

Are we talking vineyards or bottleshops?

It's astonishing how 'U.S.isized' Tasland has become, dear D_D :)

In Spain the most common choice is La Rioja for red wine

If you like white wine a good place (and not far from Portugal) is Ribeira Sacra in Galicia

9

You could try Dordogne or a bit south in Lot/Lot-et-Garonne in France.

Rioja for red wine

White Rioja can be superb - and an absolute bargain, since many think white Rioja must be inferior to the usual red.

11

Writing of wine bargains, sherry must be the world's most underestimated wine - which suits me fine.

I have sampled sherry in the bodegas of Jerez several times.

(I really hope that the emerging economies that are Brazil, China and India do not import sherry in the quantities that Thailand imported my beloved vintage port.)

10 day self drive wine tour, I once aimed at 5 days in and around Epernay but had to cut it short after 3, the French police don't take kindly to iratic drivers, I was so ragged with booze my nerves were shot to shit. I decided it was much safer to do Carrefour instead.

13

It might make a terrible title for a travel book/travelogue, Ds: Three days in Epernay followed by two in Carrefour.

14

It was 3 days in Epernay and 2 cases from Carrefour .
