Will we have missed the migration in early October?Country forums / Africa / Kenya
On either side of the border. ie Serengeti or Kenya side?
Hi pns - well the first thing you need to remember about the migration is that it is a moveable feast (yes pun intended). The wildebeest move as the feed/water on the Serengeti is used up. In general by late September the migration will have crossed the Mara River and be resident in the Maasai Mara. So yes the Mara is the place to see the migration in October. One small problem - the Mara is small (1800 sq km) compared to the Serengeti (14700 sq km) so be prepared for the invasion of what appears to be "wall to wall" mini vans and land cruisers/land rovers. Go and enjoy! | 1
Moveable Beast. LOL So if we hit the Mara will see thousands of wildebeest moving across the plains ala Seringeti? If sounds worth it hordes of tourists or not. Thanks for the info mate. Cheers | 2
By September and early October they start winding their way back to Tanzania. | 3
brst - on what do you base this info?? The information I have (personal and TZ National Parks) is that the southbound migration does not (usually) start until November. Yes this can be affected by a lack of feed and water in the Mara and early rain falls in the NE of the Serengeti. Our poster was talking about early Oct thus my answer!! | 4
From the time they start crossing the Mara (from TZ to Kenya), which is around July/August, do they keep crossing continuously backs and forwards until they go back to TZ? Do they cross to Kenya at one point and at another point when they go back to TZ? | 5
