This is the government line:
http://www.tourism.gov.pk/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourism_in_Pakistan
They quote LP which brings up the subject of 'why don't you look at the various posts on the Pakistan country forum'?

Great people and interesting food, but sometimes I get an awkward pause when people find out I am an American. They are mostly curious about the where I am from and what brings me to pakistan, especially for an Asian guy. Things were great until I noticed a few men playing tag from ISI (their spy agency) following me around for a few days. But no harm done, just wanted to make sure I was just a tourist, I supppose or maybe it was from a picture of me in uniform lol. I would strongly suggest being careful around the border near afgan, things can get very hostile not to mention child prostitution being pretty much normal. My friends from the area always tell me to not trust anyone if they know you have an American passport, I don't know if that means if you might get scammed or maybe worse. I may go back again next near after Nepal but I haven't decided yet

You could say that they usually just kidnap forens instead of killing them like their own people. Some areas are relatively safe. My cousin's daughter visited Lahore (plucky kid) and I am envious of doing the same. Maybe its a good idea to put my Canadian maple leaf on my back pack again. Relatively little bombing in Lahore..

Northern Pakistan has the most beautiful mountain scenary in the world ( and I have hiked in about all the world mountain ranges).

Why visit Pakistan? As I usually say to friends and various disbelievers, the real world is not like on tv, and you've got to see it for yourself. There's is a huge political bias and a lot of prejudice spread by western media, putting some countries in bad light, which most the times is undeserved and exaggerated.
Pakistan, besides kind people and good food, has one of the best trekking areas in the world, and the KKH leading to the mountains is one of the most scenic routes you can ever travel.
