which is the best hurtigruten stretch?Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Norway
Hi If I am only going on Hurtigruten for one night, which stretch is the best? I had an idea about taking it between Bergen and Ålesund - is that recommended? We will have a car. Thanks in advance!
Best for what? Scenery at night? Or just the boat itself? | 1
In summer only, the north bound (from Bergen) goes from Ålesund into the Geiranger Fjord and back again, which is a very nice part, though you will see the same fjord twice. Otherwise I'd maybe vote for Svolvær to Tromsø. | 2
thanks for input! well, it's certainly the scenery i am thinking about. but if you know which boats are nicer, would be good to know :) | 3
We took the Alesund to Bergen link in August. We were on the M/S Lofoten, which is one of the older boats. It is indeed very scenic. One thing you have to consider is that you will have to board at midnight. There's room in the lounges to crash until the sun comes up, although they do make stops and handle cargo during the night. --Dav | 4
The hurtigruten mentioned by #2 that goes into Geiranger fjord is the second largest and one of the newest if I remember correctly. We took it to the end of the fjord and then went by bus back to Alesund (as part of a Norway in a Nutshell trip). I'm pretty sure it was the Lofoten we were also on from Alesund to Bergen, which is the oldest boat in the fleet and considerably smaller. | 5
To the last poster: you are mistaken, ALL the 11 Hurtigruten ships travel the whole distance. Which one you get depends on which day you happen to travel. | 6
