Where to stay between Plitvice Lakes and Rovinj?

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Croatia

Hello,

We will be starting the day (early) in Zagreb and driving to the Plitvice Lakes and ending our day and staying over somewhere along the way to Rovinji (or Pula...TBD later).

Is it reasonable to think we can make it to Opatija or Rijeka? Which of these two towns would you recommend staying in? Any specific hotels or things to do/see are greatly appreciated!

  • We will be driving a rental car.

Thank you all very much!

Phil

Yes it's reasonable to think you can make it. However, a lot of people wish they had more than half a day for Plitvice NP. Not that you can't see it all in an afternoon, but it is beautiful in different ways at different times of day.

If you did leave in the afternoon, you could make it to Rijeka without problems. Check driving times on www.viamichelin.com</a>. Opatija is a nicer place than Rijeka, and very close. To add an extra option in case you are nature lovers, before you get to Rijeka there is another beautiful NP called Risnjak. You can find places to stay in neighbouring villages.

Rijeka is ok but Opatija is smaller and has more to offer, there is also Volosko with a beautiful harbour setting and top class restaurants. A walk on the promenade is a must and you can drive up Mount Ucka for a breathtaking view of the Kvarner Gulf.

The road northwest from the park to the expressway is rather narrow and twisty at first but after 20 miles it slowly improves. Take x-way toward Zagreb than Rijeka, much faster than the 2 lane roads.
