What to do on sunday afternoon in London???

Country forums / UK & Ireland / England

Hello everyone,

I will have about 5 hours to spend in London this sunday. I've already visited most touristic sites and I know London quite well on the touristic area...
Would you have an idea of something different to do in London on sunday afternoon???? I quite like market, shopping, exotic area...
Also, what is your favourite place for cream tea????

Thanks a lot everyone,
Béré

As a tourist/medium term resident, I think the best thing to do on London is visit Hyde Park and watch the excitement at Speaker's Corner. I've never seen anything like it anywhere. Basically a whole range of people roll up with step ladders and bottles of water then start discussing whatever subjects they want. There's a fair bit of crowd banter and things get a little warm, but it's all essentially in the spirit of free speech. I would put it in my top 10 things to do in London. Unmissable. Failing that Spitalfields Markets and the Columbia Road flower markets make a nice little double.

Have you been to Camden Market? If not, this is a great thing to do from lunchtime onwards on a Sunday. Its a huge market and series of shops spread over quite a large area in Camden, so if you like markets its ideal. There is also a great range of food stalls, so its a good idea to go with an empty stomach. Its all centred around a canal, so its also quite interesting from that point of view. Locks, boats etc.

Try London Free List or buy a copy of Time Out magazine

You should try Spitalfields Market & Brick Lane- very happening at the moment, Petticoat Lane, nearby, is much more traditional. The only problem is that many of our markets begin to closev at about 2pm.

Most places that are famous for their cream teas eg The Ritz are usually booked up months in advance. The one I have seen at The Savoy always looks nice ditto the Waldorf Astoria. However, the most happening place to offer such a thing, with a one-off ambience is The Wolsely, along by The Ritz on Piccadilly- the building itself is wonderful & the buzz is great

Spitalfields Market gets my vote. Lots of places to eat, great shopping.

As for afternoon tea (we don't really call them cream teas, unless you are in Devon or other country places) - the Wolseley do a pretty good one. Forget the Ritz - impossible to book. I also like Claridges but it is pricey.

I'd go with Spitalfields Market as well (I live nearby and it's great).

Alternatively, if you like Irish music there are some ogod sessions on a Sunday afternoon. I'd recommend Dylan's Bar in Lewisham High street (opposite the big police station). Then again, I would because I'll probably be playing there!
