What should I look for in travel insurance?Interest forums / Gap Year & Round the World Travel
I have read this forum a bit and know that its important to read the fine print for travel insurance because they vary a lot. But I don't know what to look for specifically. My dad (76 but very healthy) and I are going to Burma for 3 weeks and I don't really know what we need or what is a good deal. Excess is usually important with insurance I guess... and finding one that will cover someone his age- but I'm not sure what else to look at. I would also like to get one that will fly us back to Australia in an emergency and cover medical costs. Or at least fly us back here - because we are hoping for something reasonably priced. It'd be great to get some general advice, common pitfalls etc. Or does anyone know if Worldcare (Allianz) is any good or can anyone suggest a good value but decent insurance for Australians (especially older people)?
It's your dad's age that will dictate his travel insurance. And a different insurance company might be the best one for you. I live in England, so don't know what's available in Australia but, at 67, was able to find a company that would insure me at a very reasonable rate. I had to answer some questions - which I did honestly, because if you don't, or if you fudge the issue, the have an excuse not to pay out. After I had answered everything to their satisfaction they gave me a very good quote with NO exclusions (and I stated that I had had sciatica). Now - about reviews as to which are good companies and which are not. A lot of people try to cheat insurance companies. So the companies are naturally suspicious about paying out. And people who have complaints are also quicker to comment than those who've had a good deal. Sorry - in this instance there are no short cuts. But I hope I've given you enough pointers to find your dad a good one. Then, take heart, it will be easier to find your own. | 1
Thanks : ) we have found one for him now. while it is hard to find one for someone his age it isn't impossible. And you're right you just need to actually read everything and be thorough. Thanks again | 2
