Weekend trip to CopanCountry forums / Central America / Honduras
I'm in Tegucigalpa for business, but was hoping to be able to get out of the city for the weekend so I can see at least some of what Honduras has to offer. I was hoping to be able to go to Copan - maybe fly out on Friday night to San Pedro Sula and return on Sunday. Does anyone have any recommendations for an overnight trip to Copan? Is it worth it? And what airlines go there? I know it's a super short trip, but I've got to escape the Intercontinental and haven't had a second to even start looking into it. Any recommendations are welcomed. By the way, as a former Peace Corps volunteer, I don't mind taking buses or roughing it a bit in any way to get out there. In fact, I miss that on this trip...
Currently their are no commerical flights in/out of Copán. There are frequent buses between SPS and Copán taking 3/3.5 hours but the last one departs (maybe?) 4pm at the latest. You'd need to get at least a mid-day start from Tegus to prevent having to spend the night in San Pedro Sula. Think you'll find Copán Ruinas quite enjoyable in a manner that only leaves you wanting more! The ruins are very special, but there are also numerous types of other activities in the immediate area. The town is quaint but has not lost it's uniqueness with tourism development - which offers about any budget level of accommodations/dining you'd care for. Compared to life in hectic Tegus, I'll predict you'll already be planning a return visit - before even leaving from your first one; ¡Disfrute! | 1
I believe that there are also buses between Copan and Tegus... I would look into that rather than the flight + bus. Probably a shorter total trip time & certainly much lower cost. Either way, you'll want at least one night in Copan which is a small but somewhat charming town with lots of tourist infrastructure. | 2
I really love Copán and hope you make it there. I've had friends piece together the buses from Tegus to Copán Ruinas in the past and it took much longer than busing to SPS and from there to Copán. Lots of photos and recommendations in the 2005 and 2008 collections below. Happy trails! | 3
Copan is a beautiful town and would be a treat for a day or a week. It is relaxed and worth the trip. We stayed at a couple of mid ranged hotels, but there are many places at various prices. I really liked staying at Don Udos. The rooms vary in price and size. A simple one was under 50us (for two) a night and included breakfast. The courtyard is really pretty. Everything is close in Copan. It is a cool place to kick around. | 4
