Weather and traveling alone

Country forums / South-East Asia Mainland / Cambodia

Hey,
Ive been looking in older posts but havent been able to find answers. Im wondering if anyone has has experience traveling in cambodia during july/aug? Is it still possible to sunbathe and go swimming or does it rain/storm up all day in generall?
Im a female and traveling alone for 3 weeks. Ive never been there before, so im thinking about safety.. Any inputs?

Does not usually rain all day so no problem sunbathing or swimming - most likely (very) heavy storm in afternoon or early evening lasting round an hour

Safety basically take normal precautions although if you intend being in Sianoukville then best to take more care at night as there have been incidents (and not just aimed at females)

As bigal1 said. I find Cambodia particularly pretty during July and August as the countryside can be lush and green with growing rice paddies, also the daily rainy spells tend to keep the dust down which tends to coat everything in dry season. Enjoy.

2

may keep the dust down but can results in very dirty feet as paths and roads quickly flood if you are in the country

Normally the weather is ok at this time of year. This year, at least in Sihanoukville, we have just had a month of pretty bad weather ( what is normally expected in September/October) however it looks sort of ok for the next few weeks. As for the stereotypical Sihanoukville knockers, ignore them - take the normal precautions you would take any where and you will probably be safer here then any other large town in the world and that includes any other large town in Cambodia.

Not much rain in Siem Reap at the moment, limited to a few hard, short showers.

Quite a few thefts here of late, hundreds of thousands of Khmer workers coming back from Thailand does not help.

However, crime against foreigners is rarely violent and consists more of bag snatching and breaking and entering.

No crime in Siem Reap? Are you the official Siem Reap propaganda machine? Yes, Siem Reap is safe but so far this week I have heard of laptops, mobile phones and bikes being stolen......

And it does not sometime rain from 3 pm to 5 pm, it can rain any time of the day.....

#8 Hanno - all2 be is I am here Ratha Leng Team Leader Of Angkor Safety Group my contact mail: xxxxx so he might be a little biased on the issue of crime

9

Gotcha bigal1.

Did a bit more digging and actually the title of his organisation is a little misleading and he is in fact working for a tour company

11

That is what I figured straight away. So his views may be just a little biased. I work in a hotel here and have vested interests as well, but I believe in telling it how it is (without crying wolf either).

12

I had a read through some of his other posts and had a look at their web link which LP include on his profile (why I am not sure as it clearly breaks the rules)The problem for all2be is that he is thing from the view of a tour company and not a traveller

I knew that you worked for a hotel (but no idea which) but as far as I am aware your posts are completely separated from your work and offer sound advise (even if every now and then we may not agree)

13

Well yes, I do not mix business and pleasure:-)

#14 Rather dissapointly LP have removed the post but not asked him to ammend his profile page with a "touting header" and link to his website

Ah well....

Hi,

I'm a very small female and traveled solo in Cambodia for 3 weeks a couple of years ago. I had absolutely no problems. However I should note that I have traveled extensively in various countries including India etc and have a good sense of being observant and careful - particularly in cities. In Cambodia I used local transport and in Phnom Penh I hired a cylo driver for a couple of days. Then for a couple of other places I hired a motor bike guide to get me around. The latter was really good fun and they also took me to visit their families. If it is of interest I am in my 60's.
