VOLUNTEERING IN WESTERN KENYA

Country forums / Africa / Kenya

I have recently returned from another trip to Kenya, and while I was there this time I undertook some volunteer work in Western province.

I went to the Tumaini Miles of Smiles Centre, which I found on this forum. The nine hour bus journey from Nairobi was well worth it, once I had met the children there.

The centre is just past Kakamega in rural Western Province, a beautiful part of the country, famous for the tropical forest and Lake Victoria.

The centre has a Childrens Home, School, Clinic and Youth Programme.

I volunteered at the school and the home.

The children are a joy, despite their hardships, and the staff are welcoming and so dedicated.

I thoroughly enjoyed my short time there, and will return next year.

The centre welcomes visitors and volunteers alike. If you are considering volunteering in rural Kenya, please give Tumaini consideration. The cost to yourself will be minimal, (transport and food), but your presence there will be much appreciated.

It was a joyous and humbling experience for me, and I can't wait to return next year.
