volunteering in vang vieng

Country forums / South-East Asia Mainland / Laos

hello,

i was wondering if anyone out there has volunteered in vang vieng with Mr. Thi. if so, what kind of work did you do? i only have about three weeks free to volunteer but would love to do something working with kids. i only ask about this specific opportunity because it is mentioned in the lp guide. if anyone knows any other volunteer orgs in laos (or vietnam) that would accept someone off the street for just a few weeks, i would greatly appreciate any contact info you could provide. cheers.

Hey, Nick, what happened? Got banned or problems logging in?

And shocked about that to the extent of only being able to (try to) write Danish? Or Norwegian?

Mystery!

YOu could also work with Big Brother Mouse in Luang Prabang or Luang Namtha on a drop-in basis [practicing English several hours a day] or make arrangements with them on a strictly voluntary basis.

More info, here:

Big Brother Mouse in Laos

BTW, in some bookstores in Laos there are also Lao authored childrens/' books NOT published by Big Brother Mouse that are available and are great gifts to take to outlying villages too. These folktales have been around for years. I support Big Brother Mouse but just want others to appreciate that Lao has in the past it's own 'childrens' books'.

Elziax, you seem to be the only person who's noticed much difference.

OP, I had a PM from someone who stayed on the Organic Farm, and they said volunteering was a fairly light commitment: maybe some teaching of English to a group of local kids for a few hours in the evening, something like that. Or you could hang around, watch the workers, get involved in the agricultural activities. You pay for your own board and lodging, of course.

LOL, JB! I actually read nicky's post a second time more thoroghly, trying to decipher it. Just in case, he had an extraordinaryly strong fit of dislexis while writing - or just drank too much of the wrong kind of milkshake before...

...I mean, with him (AND with Vang Vieng!), you simply never know...

OP: When I was in VV, I spoke to some volunteers working at the Organic Farm. They said, that they think the work of the Farm is great, but that because of it being mentioned in a couple of guide books (I think also in the LP which I did not use myself), there are just too many volunteers working there and they did not really have a lot of work on their hands. Actually, they sounded bored and clearly did not want to encourage even more people working there. That might have been momentarily, though - no idea, whether this is a continuing 'problem'. And surely, I do not want to talk bad about the Organic Farm itself - what I saw and read about them all sounded good and worth supporting!

Greetings People.

Whats the saying?

There is no greater complement then being copied

Or something along those lines.

Back to the OP.

Depending on the time of year, depends on the work, but people I know who have been have really enjoyed it.

(and the mulberry shakes are Fierce)

If you can get hold of any simple English books or Children's Lao Language books then the library at the Organic Farm would greatly appreciate them.

Right, great hint from mrnicky: In both Vientiane and Luang Prabang, there are local stationary and bookshops, where they sell books for kids learning English, Lao-English dictionaries and that kind of stuff. You'll make a lot of local English-teacher in the countryside very, very happy if you provide them with that - and it does cost little more than nothing!

Nic, really, a copycat? Unbelievable! After all, there might be somebody who has a crush on you?

Its just a shame my secrete lover is trying to trash a perfectly good thread.

Anyway, I think the best course of action is to ignore it.

After all, someone would only go through that much effort if they are looking for attention.

Lets none of us speak of this "mrnioky" again.

Actually, lets none of speak of "mrnicky" again as well.

Nic
