Volunteer Work/work

hey,

Would like to spend a few months based somewhere in the Middle East and am thinking about Damascus. I work in the NGO sector so would like to pick up a bit of work whilst i am there, be it paid or not.

I have done a bit of freelance writing, so was otherwise thinking about copy editing, editing for english newspapers?

Are either of these options at all possible, or should i head to Israel or Jordan?
