Visit Spiti, Lahaul, Kinnaur in may/june ?Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / India
Hello, | ||
The Shimla-Kinnaur-Kaza-Losar route is "always" open : no seasonal winter closure. Locals are more concerned about monsoon landslides taking out the road than the few heavy snowfalls. The Rohtang La pass has opened twice : first time April 6th , with HRTC buses running Manali-Keylong for a few days until the road was taken out again. The Kunzum La is higher , colder than the Rohtang and comes last in BROs priorities - opens after Manali-Leh. Vargis site relies heavily on BRO guesstimates on when they will be able to open the roads. These are not official statements , it means that Times of India has published an article. These guesstimates are frequently weeks off : two weeks plus for example for last years opening of Manali-Leh and this years opening of Srinagar-Leh. That is why I stopped posting them years ago. BRO now aims to open Manali-Leh second week May. Updates on my blog below. | 1
Yes, May is the best time to visit in Spiti, Kinnaur.May to October and the temperature ranges from 0 to 15 degrees Celcius. This is the best time to visit Spiti. Winters are very cold over here and should be avoided. The road connectivity is also unreliable during the winters with Manali-Kaza highway being cut-off. This is the better time to travel these destination. And you can also easily travel with public transport. Shimla to Manali to kaza route is open in April to September. | 2
Go back to the pic of the HRTC bus earlier : even calling this a road involves a level of diplomacy. The road is where the rocks are smaller.
The Kunzum La has never opened in April - early June is more normal. Last year the first vehicles to Keylong crossed the Rohtang La on April 27th , this year after exceptionally low levels of snow it has been on and off since April 6th. Kunzum La opening is still a long way off. | 3
