Vienna Travel Card :Country forums / Western Europe / Austria
Will be in Vienna for 5 days in a week or so. Is it right that my kids (12 and 3 yrs respectively) do not have to pay for their transport ? Any other suggestions ?
Yes, that's right. On the homepage of the Vienna Card they explain that per Card one child under 15 can travel for free. Children under 6 don't have to pay at all. | 1
Cool, cheers. | 2 | |
Any other suggestions ? Depending on how much use you're going to make of public transport over the 5 days then might be worth your while to consider the WochenKarte...costs €14 and runs Monday to Monday...as #2 mentions, your 3 year old goes free and as far as I am aware under 15s go half-price on the Vienna system...so if you have an idea of how much travelling you're going to do then you can work out which is best for you...however unlike the Vienna Card this is purely a transport card only and no discounts at museums etc... Or it might suit you to purchase a further 48 hour card for €10 after your Vienna card expires to get best value out of the system...similar conditions as Wochenkarte...runs for 48 hours from when first used/stamped... | 3
Thanks. Have been wondering about the travel card. I can get one for 72 hours which includes the discounts on museums etc. for about 16 euros I think, and not have to pay for either of the kids. Seeing as we're there for about 5 days, and bearing in mind the reduction on entrances etc., I think this will be the best option. If we have a few trips where we just pay on the day, the cost will be about the same overall as the Weekly Card I reckon, plus the other benefits. | 4

Kinda depends on the entrance discounts, and how many times we'll use it then, I reckon. About 35 euros for the weekly card for 3, and 37 for the 3 day one for 2 including museum reductions. Add a few single journies and take away any discounts ..... Will do our sums; I know some of the discounts can be up to 25% or something like that. | 6
We ended up getting the 3 day travel card, NOT the Vienna Card. Glad we did, as it was about 5 euros cheaper, and we only ended up doing 2 musuems, and one of those was the Wien Museum exhibition which was free on Sunday anyway. Definitely worth weighing up how much you might use the discounts on offer. 5 euros = at least 4 entrances on average, and mostly the discounts in shops are not the sort of stuff your average family holiday crowd would visit. | 7
Gyro, I'm inclined to agree with you...usually when I buy one of those cards in whatver city I find I would have done better without it...and when you have it in your pocket then there is pressure to use it and visit something that you may not have particularly desired etc...also the good thing about the travel card is that it's 72 hours and not 3 days...so if you buy at 11am on Monday then you can still use it on Thursday morning til 11 which can be really handy... | 8
Yeah, it was. We bought/validated ours around 10-ish the first day, and my daughter and I managed to drop our luggage off at Westbahnof before 10am 3 days later, so still had tram travel back included. That meant we only paid for one U-bahn back to the station later on our last day, which was nice. | 9
