Value for money accommodation on Galoa, Kadavu

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I've just come back from Fiji & the highlight was a stay at the newly opened Bai's Place on Galoa Island, Kadavu.
In the current LP it mentions Reece's Place on Galoa Island maybe opening soon, but it has been closed since 2000 with no intention of opening again.
I did stay at Reece's in 2003, was surprised that it wasn't a functioning backpacker's anymore & was put off by a odd, reclusive American woman living there who reminded me it was a private residence when I went to make a cup of tea, although I had paid to the Reece's accommodation money.
I had met Bai Whippy who lived next to Reece's in 2003, when I walked around the island. Being stuck at Vunisea in Aug 2009, I rang him in desperation & happily found out that his new backpacker place was to open the next day (Aug 15th)
He has constructed several comfy beachside bures & a boarding house. The settlement is very down to earth like a Fijian village - if you want air con, net access & lattes you may as well stay in Suva - its for people who wish to sample real Fijian culture - eat the traditional root crops, visit the island's village, fish, dive or snorkel, boat trips, hiking, ornithology or do nothing.
Its the closest accommodation to Vunisea airport, being 5 minutes away from Kadavu by boat & a short road trip (except for Baina's who wanted $70 per night each to stay in a house with the family) The resorts we rang were largely unhelpful & unfriendly.
My daughter & I fished, swam, kayaked, scuba dived & relaxed in the sun overlooking some wonderful tropical scenery!

The rates are: Dorm: $20 per day
Pte Bure: $35 per day
Meals: $15 for 3 meals a day.

His contact details are: whippywb@yahoo.com.au

And please note: REECE'S IS CLOSED & HAS BEEN FOR 9 YEARS

Noted-Thanks for the info.

Kadavu could use more budget accomodation.
