Uyuni visit in February: Rainy season and Tour with DC3

Country forums / South America / Bolivia

Hi,
we plan to visit Uyuni in February for a couple of days. We were wondering if it is worthwhile as in February it's rainy season and due to some books the lake is covered with water.

In addition, has anyone gone on the DC3 flightes offered by AEROSUR? We would like to do the 3 day package starting in La Paz.

Thanks for your help!

Wolfgang

I did the La Paz to Sucre run with them in November, and it was a newer Boeing (can't recall which model), and it still had the AeroMexico signage on the seat trays.

The plane was very well maintained, the service was good, and they seemed to be a well-run organization. They still didn't have the greatest communication skills when there was a slight delay, but then, I found that to be the case in general for Bolivian transportation. Haven't tried their Rurre route. I also asked about three different people about the Uyuni airport, which I had heard was now offering direct AeroSur flights: I got different answers from all three people ("It's not really running yet", "It runs irregularly", etc.), and the 2 airplanes that were there when I drove by looked like they were only doing commercial shipments. So my take-away from that experience is that whatever answer you get, confirm it with a second opinion. I checked their web page just now, and they're taking bookings ( AeroSur Website ) , but it looks like they only go there a few times a week.

I strongly recommend them, and would use them again without a second thought.

As far as your Salar question, others will have more certain info, but I understand the Salar 'crossings' and visits to Incahuasi Island aren't done in January/February because the water gets too deep. On the other hand, I just bet there's got to be some places where the Salar is not as deep, and my guess is that tours would still probably venture a portion of the way in. Then you could get some of those fabulous 'mirror-sky reflection' shots. Just bring boots! Anyone else know for sure how the tours handle the Salar in rainy season?

I am at this monment at the Airport in Cchabamba.
Aero Sur confirm that they are operating three flights per week only to / from Cochabamba. It is a DC-3, jets cannot land at the gravel airstrip at Uyuni. Have taken this flight, DC-3 is one of the most safe aircraft flying. Flight is low so you see plenty. Try to get a seat on the right side of the aircraft going to Uyuni, you will then see other Salars enroute.
Enjoy, it will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life combined with the Salar!

Here is the AeroSur schedule as posted on their web site for Uyuni:
