Using mobile internet (dongle) on Koh Phi Phi or other island in ThailandCountry forums / Thailand / Thailand
Hi, my friend would like to go to Koh Phi Phi island (or any other island if necessary) for half a year (in october) and use mobile internet (dongle) he would probably have to buy in Bangkok... He needs internet for 8 hours a day and would prefer not to use internet cafe, so that he could work on the beach.... Has anyone used a dongle on any of the islands in Thailand? Thank you very much
Haven't used one in Thailand, but elsewhere, and it didn't work worth crap. If you really want to improve the range of WiFi then you need a directional antenna. Dongles are omni (all directions) antennas, and don't do all that much better than the antenna that is built in around the screen in laptops. I now use a directional, flat plate antenna, that really improves the signal when pointed at the source. There are also mobile access dongles, but being online 8 hours a day over a mobile connection can't be cheap, and speed in the islands is probably crap too. | 1
Im using one right now..... You can buy 'dongles' that connect via USB. You buy a sim to put in it. Call the operator for the sim company ( I think DTAC will be best ) They speak very good english. Ask for a GPRS Package. They have a range of packages and he will want probably the one that is around 400B. Pop the sim in the dongle......pop the dongle in the laptop and off you go ...... | 2
I'm stunned, that is a terrific price! I would have thought it would be much more. | 3
If thats you in your avatar, I have a spare dongle you can use.... I'm upset no-one got in there before me with that one! | 4
