Using a HDD Camcorder in Cuzco (altitude issue)

Country forums / South America / Peru

I have been researching HDD camcorders for my upcoming trip. They all seem to have issues with being used above 3000 metres/9800 feet. I have been looking at Panasonic, Sony and JVC models and decided on the Panasonic HDD/SD model. Has anyone been successful at using one to film in Cuzco? This is the only place we will be on this trip at that altitude.

Does anyone have a horror story about a HDD camcoder that crashed in Cuzco?

I can not give you info about HDD camcorders, but hope this will help: camcorders using DV or DV cam tapes can work without problem beyond 4000 meters (experience based on a Sony DSR 400 working at an average of 4200 meters in places like Pastoruri, Puno and Huancavelica).

Read this discussion about iPods and high altitude. I can't help you on the specific HDD issue.

My partner took his HDD Sony camcorder with him when we went for our trip through Peru, and it worked beautifully through the altitude of Cuzco to the mugginess of Iquitos. Burning the data off the internal hard drive was another issue - we really struggled to find computers able to handle the job. Had we known it was going to be complicated and difficult, we would have brought an external portable hard drive with us. Something to consider, perhaps.

Thanks, Cecilia, I will check it out. La Paz is higher than Cuzco.

That Potter Girl, I just want to shoot some video of the town and probably a folklore show-usual tourist stuff. As a last resort, I can get video on the digital camera but it won't be as good as a camcorder can do.
