Uganda Travel Safety Query for Americans

Country forums / Africa / Uganda

I have the opportunity to accompany my partner to Uganda this coming winter for a conference in Kampala and also hope to go on a "gorilla" safari for a few days; so just wondering how to get a fair assessment of safety for Americans in Uganda - with so much coverage of the attacks in Kenya, do I paint Uganda with the same brush?

I hope Uganda learn from last year terrorist attack at a restaurant watching world cup and siege of Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi,

why worry about the safety of Americans the issue is one of concern for all.

What you have to assess is how many incidents of this nature have there been and what is the likelyhood of having the misfortune to be caught up in such an incident. personally I would say you are in more danger in the States

In terms of global security, there have been attacks from NY to London, Nairobi to Bali, and with the Westgate massacre, regional security will be on alert.
From the point of view of personal safety, impressions may be misleading, but have rarely felt more at ease it any other African state, whether Kampala, Kabale, FP..

My Dad Charles happens to be working with the U.S Mission in kampala and could easily help you Get in touch with the U.S Mission in kampala for security tips. You're American Mtriana so if someone said would they be safe travelling to Boston or New York what would you tell them. Kampala is a fantastic city but nowhere in the world can be 100% safe.

Uganda has always been safe my brother but more safer now after the westgate incidence because security have been beefed up, for Gorrilla Tacking you can contact richard@tamanitours.com for an excellent service.

We traveled to Uganda just after the attack at the soccer match in 2010. Security was excellent and we felt very safe. I recommend gorilla trekking in Bwindi and do not miss the Batwa Experience--a trip back in time into the impenetrable forest to see how the pygmies (Batwa) lived prior to being evicted from the forest in 1992. www.batwaexperience.com
