Two questions

1. Will be in Singapore for New Years, where is the cool place to be? Is there a fireworks demonstration, or something cool to take in for the holiday?

2. Plan on proposing New Years eve as well. Want to pick up a ring in SIngapore a few days prior as buying where I'm at now and then having it re-sized if I get the size wrong in Singapore will be a bit of a pain. Not looking to drop a gazillion dollars on the ring, she'd much rather I spend on travel than "things", but I still want to get something nice. Anyone have any suggestions on places to go look in Singapore? I'm sure with all the mega malls jewelery stores will be a dime a dozen, but I was hoping to find someplace with good service that could perhaps supply something a bit unique to the region. Thanks for any input!

There's the huge all night Zouk party on Sentosa...Dj's, bands, fireworks. And of course...tickets. A lot of people go down to Clark or Raffles Quay on the Singapore River where there are fireworks. Many others go up to Orchard Road, which is a bit of a zoo, with people chanting and the huge video displays doing the count-down...a la Times Square.

Like Redape said mate Clarkes Quay is usually good for fireworks etc, and I would DEFINATELY suggest taking in the zoo and the Chinese and Japanese gardens (beautiful place to propose maybe?)

As for the ring mate you are right, Jewellry stores are a dime a dozen in the mega malls, they tend to be large, standardised affairs though, the same stuff you can buy in any large city in the world. You may be hard pressed to buy a wedding ring that is unique to the region. Maybe stick to a standardised gold and diamond affair for that though, women will probably like that better. I did see some form of orchid brooches while I was there that seemed to be unique to the region? Sorry I can't help more than that, not really my area of expertise, but good luck!

the big fireworks display will be at the marina bay area
the usual spots (esplanade, marina restaurants etc) will be obscenely packed, and ridiculously over priced

but

for something unusual, try the bum boats
im taking my girl on the (overpriced S$30) new year's eve boat ride
it goes up and down the river, and then parks it in the middle of the bay
next to the hundreds of white floating balls the esplanade is doing this year
and at midnight, the boat will be right below the fireworks
