trying to find yachties i've met recently

Interest forums / Life on the Ocean

Any ideas on how to try and track down 2 boats I met while sailing from Galapagos to Marquises (hiva oa) recently? The one couple is from Brisbane and the other is a Canadian living in Cairns...I believe the Auzzies will have just arrived, or arriving anytime in Brisbane, while the Canadian is probably around Tahiti and slowly making his way to Cairns. I unfortunately never got their email addresses...I have one boat name, and the other I might be slighty off with the spelling.
Thanks

Many yachts post voyage logs or blogs.....some sailing-connected sites have long lists of yachts 'out there'. One of them (might be Cruiser Log) has a 'looking for yacht.....' section. Google the yacht's name and if you don't find the one you're looking for you might (with some patience) see it mentioned in another yacht's log if you know the time of year/location to hone in on.

When you say you met them 'recently', I guess you mean the 2006 sailing season? Because of cyclone seasons, most yachts leave the South Pacific by November so it is unlikely that the Ozzies will have 'just arrived'. It is also unlikely that the Canadian will be sailing from Tahiti to Cairns at this time of year. He might have ducked into a 'hurricane hole' like Savusavu, Vuda Point of Neiafu. More likely he is already here somewhere, more overseas based yachts probably head for New Zealand than come to Australia, Ozzie boats tend to come home. If they are returning to the South Pacific, they'll be getting ready to leave May/June.

More googling will turn up the main marinas in Brisbane, you could ring and ask if they're in..... You could also try posting yourself on various 'Crew Available' sites, and hope they spot you. You could also try going to a marina and asking round-the-world cruisers, they're a pretty tight bunch and often know where MANY other boats were heading. PM me the name(s) and I'll tell you if I came across them in Cooks/Niue/Tonga last season.......

Best of luck.........

I did mean recently, at the end of October 06, I jumped on a sailboat with almost zero sailing experience in the Galapagos with full intentions of making it to Brisbane.

The Canadian has probably ducked into a hurricane hole, but the Ozzies were headed home. We were in Tahiti at New Years when we had word that they were around Raiatea...but having rudder problems again, so I can't be sure exactly where they are (hence me asking how to track these boats down).

Thanks for your reply Angela (and all your others, that I've now had a chance to read!) I will PM you, as you seem to be a great source of info, and ideally I will find these 2 boats to see how they made out.

Any novice sailors out there, please do a search on Wave2angela and write down what she has replied with, trust me, you will be glad you have this info prior to jumping on the boat!!

Thanks
Karen
