Travelling around VenezuelaCountry forums / South America / Venezuela
Hi All, I am flying into Caracas at the end of month, and not really sure what to expect, and how easy it is to get around Venezuela etc. I have travelled around Asia, where it's very easy to get around on your own, booking tours etc. but I'm expecting it will be a lot more difficult in South America, especially as my Spanish is basic. I was thinking of booking a few tours with Osprey Travel, to get me started in Venezuela and make my first experiences a bit easier. I wanted to do Angel Falls and Orinoco Delta, however I being quoted $750 for doing these 2 sites in 5 days which is steep, especially as I am on a budget. Apart from the costs of the tours, I've been told the costs are high because I am a single traveller and the transfers are expensive between places. Does anyone have any experience or advice they can give me on what my other options are? How does the price compare with what others have done in Venezuela? Is it easy to get around Venezuela on your own? Also, could anyone give me any advice on a good intinerary to do in Venezuela, in terms of routes and places to see. Any advice is greatly appreciated, Many Thanks Kris
It is easy to get around Venezuela on your own. Buses are frequent and cheap. Long haulers especially are comfortable. You can get from Merida to Caracas, some 700 + km, for just $14 US on a very nice double decker. Accomodation is more of a challenge. There are not many budget options. In a lot of towns you end up paying $20 US a night, simply because there is nothing else available. | 1
I agree with RisingFast. It is pretty easy to get around in Venezuela. Buses are frequent and cheap and usually there is no need to book ahead. Booking a tour is also easy and simple and I believe you should do it in Venezuela instead of booking ahead from the internet. You may find it cheaper to wait and book once you get in the nearby city (Ciudad Bolivar for a Salto Angel tour or Merida for a Los Llanos tour, for exemple). I did not have trouble finding good and cheap accomodation. I travelled as a couple, so I stayed in double rooms, in guesthouses or small hotels, usually paying around U$20-30 for the both of us. The only place I found ir hard to keep a budget was Caracas, wich is much more expensive. | 2
Cheers guys for the tips :) | 3
