Traveling in the FallCountry forums / Central America / Nicaragua
Hi there, new to the community and looking for some insight. I'm planning on visiting Nicaragua in the fall and was wondering if anyone had any advice for things to look for/avoid. Help is much appreciated.
Get a guidebook, read back on the Nica pages, read the FAQ, read Trip Advisor, use Google. Nica is great! | 1
Avoid october, last month of the rainy season.Go to Disneyland if you don"t know why you are going to Nicaragua........................ | 2
Avoid Disneyland, Oct in Florida is Hurricane season....hehe | 3
I'm sure spending all that time in Costa Rica makes it seem like one in the same, but - Disneyland is in California. With the 2+ weeks of earthquakes and seismic tremors rattling Nica, that's why #2's advice is spot-on! | 4
I thought Grenada was boring. Big Corn Island was good, I stalled there 5 days and never proceeded to its little sister. Funky and realitively untouristed. Next time I be headed for Ometepe firstest. Im gonna also check out San Juan Sur just so I can say I been there and give qualified advice. Nothing lower than giving advice on a place you never been to. | 5
I think it would be interesting to check out San Juan river. | 6
Granada is a small colonial city in Nicaragua overrun by tourists. Grenada is a very small island in the Caribean overrun by the USA-army somewhere in the 80"s, an hilarious act... | 7
SJDS the town is not so nice, SJR is great. Yea, Grenada invasion was back when Reagan and a president had balls... | 8
Who needs balls to invade an island about the size of Key West? pathetic......... | 9

It was icing on the invasion cake for Panama .... | 14
Ronnie and his "Freedom Fighters" were THE WORST thing that happened for Central America since the Conquest!!! The unnecessary loss of life was abominable, and there are nations and regions still recovering! | 15
Back on subject, it depends what you want. Granada is tourist oriented but still a nice place to go and a good base for day trips to many places including San Juan del Sur, Momabacho, Lake Apoyo, Masaya. There is also a few good activities in Granada itself. San Juan del Sur is the tourist spot on the Pacific and there are a lot of beaches going north and south from there, most with lodging options. Ometepe is a nice island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua and is a favorite of travelers. Lots of seismic activity right now and it is a volcanic island so I would keep that in mind, In the north you have to cool mountains, Matagalpa, Jinotege, Estelli and Selva Negro, a resort on a coffee plantation with hiking trails and wildlife. The is the northern city of Leon which is less touristy then Granada and has nice beach towns about 15 minutes away. There is the San Juan River for wildlife and Jungle exploration. Las but certainly not least are the Corn Islands, Beautiful undeveloped Caribbean gems. It's all what your looking for and how much time you have. | 16
