Traveler's checks in Kampala?Country forums / Africa / Uganda
Can anyone tell me where I should be able to cash Amex USD traveler's checks in Kampala? (I was very surprised to find out how difficult this is to do in Nairobi.)
Id' say Uganda is worse than Kenya. I have used Stanbic. http://www.stanbicbank.co.ug/SBIC/Frontdoor_02_02/0,2454,9681341_9757132_0,00.html Peace, BB | 1
Cool -- thanks, BigBri. | 2
Update: the only place in Kampala I could find that will cash traveler's checks is Crane Forex Bureau on Kampala Road. All of the banks (including Stanbic, KBC, Barclays) told me they have ceased to handle traveler's checks. | 3
Thanks for the update. You would think that options would increase over time. | 4
Travellers Cheques are become less and less accepted everywhere - why do people still use them as a matter of interest? | 5
They are great back-up. If they are stolen they will be replaced. I never plan to use them, but have been very glad to have them on several occasions. In Uganda I was out of cash. It took 45 minutes to exchange them at a poor rate, but it would have been much more expensive and time consuming to get someone to wire money. Peace, BB | 6
Yes, that's why I carry them as well. There are a lot of ATMs in Africa, but they aren't everywhere yet, so traveler's checks are Plan B for those times when I need cash and don't have access to an ATM. Trying to get the wretched things cashed is unpleasant and time-consuming, but they're replaceable, unlike cash. I am loath to carry too much cash, lest it be stolen, so cash (USD) is Plan C. If my traveler's checks get stolen, it'd be a big pain in the keister, but at least I could get my money back. If my cash gets stolen, that's all she wrote. | 7
