Travel from London to Norfolk

Country forums / UK & Ireland / England

So I'm heading up to the Norfolk area from London at the end of September. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get there (if you dont have a car) and where to stay. Also I'd gladly take any sight seeing suggestions always.

Where in Norfolk? It's one of the larger counties in England so there's a lot of possibilities.

1

I like the Burnhams (Overy Staithe & Market). Beautiful, interesting.

2

As #1 says it's a big place. Easiest way to get there is a train to Norwich.

3

Trains from London Liverpool Street will take you to Norwich for about £15-30 depending on when you visit. It's a great city and surrounding countryside is nice. If you get anywhere near the coast, be sure to check out Walberswick and Southwold- beautiful beaches, lovely pubs and campsites with teepees for hire. Apparently Johnny Depp just got a place there too...

4

Walberswick and Southwold aren't in Norfolk, charming as they may be.......

At the other end of Norfolk from Norwich is Kings Lynn - near the Wash, Sandringham, etc. From £36 return from London.

5

Trains on from Norwich will get you to Cromer & Sheringham on the north coast, or you could head east into the Broads. The first map here will give you a good idea of the geography of rail routes. Other than that, it's buses, which are likely to be far more of a headache.

6

I loved Norwich. A great cathederal, a castle and a market that has been running for centuries.

7

These ideas are all awesome! thanks so much! can't wait!

8

I want to travel from London to Swaffam and then on to Wells. No idea how to do this. TRains, buses, i've been looking.

9

Wells in Somerset or Wells-next-the-Sea?

10

There is a daily direct bus with National Express from London to Swaffham, which would be the easiest option. There's only a slight time saving by going by a train/taxi or train/local bus route, but this might be necessary depending what time of day you want to travel. The nearest station is Kings Lynn.

Swaffham to Norfolk - looks to be a pain, with the only bus option a trek back to and out again Kings Lynn. Transport Direct for buses. (Input 'Wells-next-the-sea' to find the Norfolk one....assuming that it the one you want!)

The cheapest option, and quickest, is the train from London King's Cross to King's Lynn. Then you can catch the coasthopper bus along the coast. The best place for times etc is http://www.travelineeastanglia.co.uk

The north Norfolk coast is superb in September, especially as there are not quite so many visitors. The beaches are beautiful, walking is excellent and you can really enjoy the pubs and restaurants.

A couple of useful sites for you are:

Have a great trip and maybe we'll see you there.
