Train travel from Hong Kong

Country forums / North-East Asia / China

I'm in HK for a while and interested in visiting parts of Southern China (beyond Shenzhen, Guangzhou) on 2-3 day excursions.
Xiamen seems the most interesting city within striking distance--how long does it take to get there by train?
What are the most interesting destinations to consider and where can I find more info. on prices and schedules?

Use this site to find trains, times, prices. You'll have to cross the border to Shenzhen or Guangzhou by train or bus to get trains going to other regional cities in China.

the Man in Seat 61 is a great primer to train travel in China

Xiamen is NOT a good choice by train. Busses are much more direct & much faster. Try HK -> Lo Wu -> Shenzhen > Shantou > Xiamen > Gulangyu. Busses will be much cheaper from Shenzhen than HK.

I am currently in Xiamen. A pretty good website to check out is www.amoymagic.com
Flights from HK are every day but I am not sure how expensive they will be. Supposedly the bus is 9.5 hours and US$50.
I recommmend staying on Gulang Yu as it is a little quieter than Xiamen and the ferry ride is only 5 minutes and very frequent.
There is a new international youth hostel on Gulang Yu that I don't recommend. It is new, but loud and expensive. There is a nice/cheap place called Bay View Inn right next to the youth hostel. I will be leaving Thursday, but you can email any other questions to bridget_oloughlin@yahoo.gr before then.

I agree with #3, bus would be the best way to do Hong Kong -- Xiamen.
I stayed at the IYH mentioned in #4, but found it relatively fine... though the other 3 people in my dorm room never appeared till the wee hours of the morning, and thus I never knew who they were. It seemed to be a mixed dorm though!
Cheers!
