My son and I are going to Amsterdam in May for 3 days, then to Rome for another 3, onto Paris for 3, then back to Amsterdam. I've checked out eurorail prices- expensive- and checked out the seat 61 site for point to point. Was able to get a good price on ams-milan for 58 euros, but milan-rome and rome-paris fares are unavailable this early in the search. Is there any where I can get an estimated price for these train fares so I can decide between euro-rail or point to point? Any info is much appreciated! Thanks

Yes - just try pricing them for an earlier date

Any railpass only makes sense over point to point if you use it to maximum advantage.

I've now posted instructions for how to check point-to-point train prices (and buy tickets online at cheap European prices) around Europe on www.seat61.com/Europe-train-tickets.htm</a>.

Which website you need to use depends on the journey and the ticket delivery options (and therefore where you're located, too!). Though the best sites now offer ticket pick-up at the station or (better still) print-your-own ticket systems.

It's also sometimes necessary to break the trip into sections, for example no one train booking website will book Amsterdam-Rome, but www.nachtzug.de will easily book the Amsterdam-Milan overnight sleeper train and www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html will book a seat on a connecting daytime train Milan-Rome.

Booking opens 90 days ahead (France and most international trains in western Europe) or 60 days (Italian and Spanish internal trains, for example). Just use a date within this horizon to get an idea of fares for your date of travel.

You'd be amazed at the cheap fares you can get if you book in advance on a no-refunds, no-changes-to-travel-plans basis: Paris-Rome or venice from 35 euros with couchette, Paris-Barcelona from 67 euros with bed in 4-bed sleeper (both at www.voyages-sncf.com), Amsterdam to Pargue from 39 euros with couchette (www.nachtzug.de), Paris to Geneva from 25 euros on a high-speed TGV.

Trains arrive and depart in the city centre, there's no baggage fees, no baggage weight limits, no taxis or trains to and from airports to pay for, no airport taxes, no 2 hour check-ins, you're free to bring your own picnic or bottle of wine on board if you like, and infants go free. Sleeper trains can actually save time over flying, and save a hotel bill, too!

Hi,
you'll surely find informations on this website http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
However sometimes you can spend less taking a flight (with a low cost company) than
using a train.
at the moment a flight from rome (ciampino) to milan (orio al serio) costs between 5.99 euro and 19.99 euro.
