Train/bus from Barcelona to GironaCountry forums / Western Europe / Spain
Hi! We're planning on a day trip from Barcelona to Girona then back. What are our public transportation options and where should we buy tickets? If online, from what website? Thank you!
You have at least three options:
Search engines are very good at finding these things out for you. Why not use them? | 1
Train is cheaper than bus,the time taken is pretty much the same.Unless you take the very high speed (and expensive)AVE service,in which case the train is a lot faster. No need to buy tickets online IMHO...just go to the station in Barcelona (Sants) and buy tickets there. | 2
Use loco2 and take the high speed train, if you know your date book in advance if you don't then just buy on the day at the train station. Don't know how long you have but I would highly recommend a night in Girona it is beautiful city and has some excellent restaurants and very lively. | 3
Both renfe and loco2 have a discount AVE fare of €9,40 - for an arbitrary date in mid-October. I don't know whether buying at the station closer to the date would match that. | 4
No it would not as anyone knows AVE fares are discounted in advance, a standard walk up fare is around 31€ | 5
Europeans might know that ... visitors to this branch (its reason for existing) in most cases will NOT know that. Thank goodness I'm here. | 6
What when you your first bit of advice was to use a search engine it is very easy and that is not paraphrasing. I was referring to people giving advice would know this. | 7
If the Op wants to take the AVE,that's a good price.....if not,he can just take a normal train. Its a short distance and easy trip.... | 8

That is why you should use loco2 for train bookings in Spain, Renfe is not user friendly for those who are not residents of Spain. | 12
We had no particular difficulty with it, but I concede that the mileage might vary for other travellers from outside Spain / Europe. | 13
Thank you for all the tips. Per the discussions, we'll probably opt for the cheaper trains since the travel time won't differ too much. We already know on what date we will be traveling to Girona. However, we don't know the exact time yet. I'll have to check Loco2 to see if it's easy to change our tix in case we buy in advance and miss the train/bus or change our minds on the time. Thanks again! | 14
Thanks for your info on Loco2. It's such a user-friendly site. | 15
