Towns to visit outside PragueCountry forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Czech Republic
I'll be in Czech republic for a week in November. I'd like to see a few places outside Prague (been there 3 times before) and wondered what's good. I've been to Cesky Krumlov once before but only briefly. I'll be going back there again. Karlovy Vary is in a totally different direction but I'll porbbaly check that out for a night or two as well. Anywhere else that I shouldn't miss. Telc? (Which seems difficult to get to!) Olomouc? Any tips would be great thanks.
I've visited-other than Prague and Cesky Krumlov-these towns: Brno, Znojmo, Mikulov, Telc, Ceske Budejovice, Jindrichuv Hradec, Stramberk My favourites were: Telc, Stramberk and Znojmo | 1
I enjoyed the villages up in the north. Rather than going to small towns, check out the rocks in the Cesky Raj or the ski and hiking areas of the Krknose mountains. There are plenty of homes offering private rooms - you can hike and stay wherever is convenient. | 2
HI! I recommed to visit in Kutna Hora http://www.kutnahora.cz/index.php?lns=en It is easy to get there by train or by bus. Also Terezin is interesting: or Karlovy Vary: and Karlstejn (about 30 minutes by train from Prague): and Plzen: | 3
All above are 'on the money' plus if you get to Karlovy Vary do try and visit Loket as well... | 4
Olomouc is a hit, too. | 5 | |
My favourite spot outside of Prague was definitely Kalovy Vary, in fact I liked it better than Prague. My view may be coloured though as we stayed with and were shown around by a local. Even though, definitely shouldn't be missed. So so scenic. | 6
Kutna Hora, east of Prague, is definitely good for a day trip. If you head down in the Ceske Budejovice direction, I'd recommend a trip to Trebon, it's very nice. Jindrichuv Hradec is another good bet in the southern direction Liberec, in the north, is pretty nice and not too difficult to get to from Prague. The Chateaus Frydlant and Sychrov are both within easy reach of Liberec and both beautiful places to visit. I live in Brno and its got some nice things for tourists without the touristy feel of Prague. Its also a good jumping off point for spots around it like Boskovice, Buchlovice, Kromeriz, Pernstejn Castle, Znojmo and the moravian Karst caves. It is ,however, good to remember that Prague to Brno is at least two hours by either train or bus. As you will be in the country only one week, you may want to keep to the western end of it. If you had two weeks, such a trip to the east would be much more worthwhile. | 7
Definitely go to Karlovy Vary. It is by far my number 1 choice outside Prague. However, I think that 1 day is enough to see everything leisurely. Public transport from Prague is easy and comfortable (from Florenc bus station) and it's about a 2-hour ride. | 8
It depends on what you want to see. The famous touristy places like Karlovy Vary and Cesky Krumlov only require 1 night stay. Kutna Hora and Karlstejn are worth a look and accessible from Prague. Something bigger then take a look at Olomouc (great old university city) or Hradec Kralove. The country is so beautiful. | 9
Just got back from the trip. I decided to go to Karlovy Vary and Loket. Both very beautiful. Loket is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. Prague was also great, as ever. I think I'll go back before the end of next year and try Telc and Olomouc next time. Czech has to be my favourite country in Europe. Thanks for all the help | 10
Karlovy and Loket are indeed great to visit, well done...and you can't go wrong in Olomouc... | 11
Olomouc definitely is nice and puts you in easy range of other nice places like Kromeriz and the other spots I mentioned in my previous post in this thread. Telc is also great and if you visit it, you can get to other nice places like Jindrichuv Hradec, Slavonice and the Cervena Lhota chateau. Glad you're enjoying the country, I've been living here for almost five years and have no regrets about having come. | 12
