Toronto Itinerary SuggestionsCountry forums / Canada / Canada
Hi all. I am doing a stopoff in Toronto for 4 days in July. I've previously been there (and Ottawa) so I've been to most of the big sights although I do intend to visit Niagara Falls again. I'm looking for things to see and do around Toronto. I'm interested in the great outdoors - any recommendations for day hikes would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of basing myself in Niagara rather than Toronto. At the moment I'm thinking of using public transport but I'm open to hiring a car. Many thanks.
if your into old time movie theatres or movie museum in general Kinmount a fairly easy drive north of Toronto might be of interest to you. Cineplex has 6 theatres furnished with cast offs from old movie theatres . but was told its quite busy in the summer months. old movie posters etc. one is in early 40s theme. | 1
rather than Cineplex try under highland theatre kinmount to get more info. myself never been there but one of my daughters loves it. | 2
Niagara works best if you are interested in touring wineries. The only decent hike is the one down the gorge to the river at Niagara Glen Park. There are some other parks and nature reserves but you will need a car. Toronto sprawls and sprawls; it's hard to find good outdoor areas that are accessible from the city and definitely you won't find anything accessible by public transit. But, nevertheless, there are some larger parks with trail systems right in the city. Have you been to the zoo? It's fantastic and very large. Right next door is Rouge Park, which is a giant natural area within the city's boundaries. Have you been to Toronto Islands? You might enjoy biking on the Islands. Tommy Thompson Park on the Leslie Spit is another wilderness-like area that is located in the heart of the city. Perhaps you could base yourself in Peterborough - a nice town that has some "nature" areas close by: Warsaw Caves, Petroglyphs Provincial Park. You can take a bus to Peterborough but once there you will need a car to explore outside the city. | 3
quite a few decades ago I used to take the kids to area known as Bellfountain. easy drive its just up from Brampton. has rather unique land scape as well as railway trestle. on weekends in season a farmers market was in operation . last I heard the arty lot were moving in the area. Elora gorge ( kyakas use it for practice) area used often, by film industry. another nice area. easy drive. | 4
Thanks for the suggestions. I don't drink wine so wineries don't interest me. I will do some research on Peterborough. I will also be sure to check out the two parks you mentioned. | 5
Train or bus to Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake or St Catharines.. did a quick search and found bike rental outfits in Thorold and Niagara Falls, there may be others... then your bike can take you along the Welland Canal or to some of the easier portions of the Bruce Trail for hiking. | 6
Brilliant! Thanks so much for that info. It's exactly what I was looking for. I'd come across the Bruce trail but the issue was accessing it. Again thanks so much. Feeling ultra excited now about getting out and about in the great outdoors in Canada. | 7
Peterborough one huge yawn imo. better a trip up to Collingwood. its where the sporty lot gather in winter. less stressful drive than nutso 401 for reasons best known to themselves Peterborough has been rather stagnant compared to Collingwood. | 8
