To Yaxchilan from PalenqueCountry forums / Mexico / Mexico
What are the different ways to get to Yaxchilan from Palenque? I know I have seen someone here mention to take a tour from Palenque (combi, then boat ride down river - all day trip) Is it possible to drive to Frontera Corazal and take a boat ride from there? Any other suggestions?
That is what the tours do, drive there and then you get on a boat. If you drove yourself, you would just have to negotiate a boat price yourself, by showing up and asking. Sorry, no idea of the price. It is about an hour up the river, faster coming back. You need to leave very early in the morning, the tour was nice because you could go back to sleep and wake up for the breakfast stop. There may be police checks along the highway. | 1
Thank you Are there other experiences you recommend that allow experiencing the jungle and/or the areas around Palenque? Right now it either: Any Alternative suggestions? | 2
There might be a way to get there without taking the boat, but I think most, if not all, tourists reach the site via the boat from Frontera Corazal.
This seems to be a good way to do it and could be less expensive than going on your own.
Yes, this is what I did, though I took one of the public transportation vans down, rather than driving my own vehicle. I was dropped off at the turnoff for Frontera Corazal and hitch hiked into town from there (the van I took continued south on the highway). There was a taxi waiting at the turnoff, but it was easy and free to hitch hike instead.
I've read that there are tours from Palenque for around 600 pesos. I got down to Frontera Corazal for around 80 pesos, but the boats cost 1200 pesos per trip, with two hours of waiting time at Yaxchilan. I spent a night in Frontera Corazal and was lucky to find a group the next morning that were going to the ruins and I paid 250 pesos to join their boat. Otherwise, I would have paid 1200 as there were no other people going at the time.
Just show up.
Good paved road all the way. | 3
I´ve read about some sacred caves in the hillsides just above Palenque, but don´t have directions. You would have to treat it as an adventure, taking public transport and asking locals as you go. | 4
Corozal, not Corazal. | 5
The price is per-boat. If it's just you, you'll pay the entire price. Try to get on a boat that's filling up and split the cost. Might be worth it to wait and see if other individual travelers show up. Plenty of boats - they go all day. We had to pay approx. $50 for our boat with just two. | 6
