Tips and suggestions on crossing the Indian Ocean?

My girlfriend and I are attempting to get from Thailand to Greece in a two-month span... for cheap, and with no planes.

I'm wondering what Thorn Tree folks know about crossing the Indian Ocean on ships and boats. Can we get from Thailand (or Malaysia) to India for cheap? Can we get from India to the Arabian Peninsula or Horn of Africa for cheap? While we're at it, does anybody know a good way to get from those spots up to Crete? And we'd really like to figure out a way to get paid for it all, as well.
