Tibet permit help!

Country forums / North-East Asia / Tibet

Hi all.

In 6-8 Weeks a friend and I will be in Beijing and looking at getting the 2/3 day train to Lhasa. We are trying to get our heads around the Tibetan permit situation! We understand we will need this permit but will the train ride to Lhasa be enough or do we have to book a tour? Also how would I get from Lhasa to Kathmandu? Could this be done by transport or do I have to hire someone?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dan

Unfortunately you will have to book a tour (not just train or air tickets).

Foreigners are not allowed to take public buses from Lhasa to the Nepali border (Dram), you will have to hire a car.

You need to arrange a complete tour that includes travel permits, a tour guide, a private vehicle and a driver. There are no exceptions to this. For more information on how to get to Tibet, read through the following article:

yes, right. You have to book a tour at least with permit, guide, car with driver included.
But I think you also have to ask the agency to help you book the train ticket for you.

But I think you also have to ask the agency to help you book the train ticket for you.

You may be able to get the train ticket yourself but as tickets go on sale at the station 10 days prior to departure, you may find that there are no tickets available last minute.
