Thingvellir + F208 - AccomodationCountry forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Iceland
Hello, Could someone please tell me if there is any accommodation between Hrauneyjar Guesthouse and Hólaskjól-Higlandcenter? I have a tent, but am just plotting on my map places I can stop if the weather gets bad etc. I have looked up the Landmannalaugar Hut but it appears its quite a ways off the F208 requiring a possible hike? Is this right? I've also notice don Google Earth a hut called Glaðheimar? Lastly...next Sunday I plan to make it to Thingvellir early evening. Does anyone have recommended spots / sites to camp around or just past Thingvellir? Many thanks, Josh
Josh, I may be misunderstanding you - but there is a spur off the F208 (it even has a number - F224) that runs practically right up to the hut. There is a river that you would need to ford on foot (I suspect) but apart from that I think you would be able to ride your bike. It doesn't seem to be that far either ... At Thingvellir there is a camp site where you would be expected to camp - I am pretty sure camping anywhere else within the National Park would be frowned upon ... | 1
Landmannalaugar is the only accommodation between Hrauneyjar and Holaskjol. The spur road is only about 3 or 4km, but there is a hill to go over. There is a footbridge over the river at Landmannalaugar so you shouldn't have to get your feet wet, but will probably need to demount your luggage and make several crossings to keep your feet dry. The area around Landmannalaugar, for 20km or so, is a reserve with no wild camping - you will see the signs, they put them up long before you even get into the reserve, but they usually have a map somewhere, sometimes on the back, showing you the precise extent of the restriction - it is a lot less than the whole southern highlands. There is also a no camping restriction precisely at Eldgja, though I think if you walk a short distance south down the canyon (flat grassy bottom) so you are not visible from the road, and are on a bike no one could complain. Last time I was in the area, the owner of Holaskjol had put up a lot of home-made no camping signs of no legal force for some distance either side of their facility - you can wild camp in that area so long as you are not within 1km of them, regardless of the home-made signs, the tricky bit is finding somewhere you'd want to wild camp - there's some really nice grassy bits by the river but they are rather exposed to the passing traffic and the wind - we found somewhere with a bit more shelter and privacy a few km beyond H. | 2
Hello again Hoff Leifur, Thank you for both bits of advice. As long as there is a spot designated for camping I can stop at, that's perfect. I had read about restrictions around wild camping within the reserve so whilst I love a good wild camp, I do like to abide by the laws of the land. After my night at Holaskojal...I was going to cycle onto Maelifell before heading down to Vik. Whats the F210 like to Maelifell? | 3
Not done that end of the F210. It's reputation is scenically less rewarding and sandier than the other end. | 4
