Thing to do, places to Acclimitize around KathmanduCountry forums / Indian Subcontinent / Nepal
I am going on a Tibet tour on next Tuesday. But I would like to spend a few night at a higher elevation to acclimitize. I have no guide book. Any suggestions on things to do for a few days within reasonable reach of Kathmandu at a higher altitude?
You can pick up a cheap guidebook (Nepal/Tibet) at a local bookstore in Thamel. Try Pilgrim Book House. Kathmandu is in a valley. Just check out the local stuff in/around KTM in 3 days. I wouldn't worry about acclimatization. Just get to Tibet and take it easy for the first couple of days. If you've chosen a decent tour, it should provide a day or two for acclimatzation. There are plenty of day walks around the villages of KTM (and Bhatkpur/patan) that you can consider. I like walking from Changu Narayan downwards... | 1
You can start walking down to Changu Narayan from Nagarkot...stay at The Fort Hotel there...quite expensive though... | 2

In response to a couple of previous comments, the standard overland tour to Llasa, which is the one that I will be doing, does rise in altitude quite quickly. I don't have the exact heights in front of me, but quick assent could be a problem. The first night is high; the second night is higher. I have spoken with some people that say that it would be far better to acclimitize. Nagrakot is only at 2000m and, therefore, it won't really help with acclimitization very much. Kathmandu won't at all. | 4
