Temple of Amenhotep

Country forums / Africa / Egypt

The Smithsonian Magazine just did a cover story on the Temple of Amenhotep III. From what I can tell in the article, this stretched 500m from the Colossi of Memnon. They say that it dwarfed Karnak, and that it will take at least two decades to excavate.

Has anyone visited the excavations? It sounds like a very cool thing to witness. How open are excavations to the public? The photos show a lot of rubble, but also a lot of new statues they are unearthing.

The following is quoted from Wikipedia, which basically means it ISN'T worth visiting

Quote

Today the temple is almost totally disappeared, with only the Colossi of Memnon – two massive 18-metre stone statues of Amenhotep that stood at the gateway, still visible. It was constructed closer to the river than any of the other mortuary temples, and hence decayed quicker, and it was used in ancient times as a source of construction material and a granite stelae Amenhotep can be found in the temple of Merenptah, which is located about 100 metres to the north.

I found the article from the Smithsonian online ...Unearthling Egypt's Greatest Temple

I still can't tell if it's worth a look - but the article is far more interesting than the Wikipedia notes.

The excavations taking place behind the two colossi of Memnon statues is walled off with canvas so you cannot see anything and, naturally enough, tourists are not allowed ramble through the site.
