Tea in Indonesia, Philippines, VietnamInterest forums / Get Stuffed
I posted this on the SEA branch but figured I should give it a go here too.... I need to find out more about tea in Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. I know it's grown in Indonesia and Vietnam but I am particularly interested in how it's consumed- in which form (green/black/oolong), with or without additives (sugar, lotus leaves), at what time of the day, with food (or not). I am interested both in hot tea as well as botled ready-to-drink forms of (ice) tea. Any kind of insights and learnings you can share will be greatly appreciated. thanks! x-posted on SEA braches
Indonesians that I know drink a very floral tea with plenty of sugar and no milk. It's called 'teh' in Indonesia. | 1
Come to think of it one type is called 'teh bunga' which means flower tea. | 2
There are some pretty decent rolled, fermented and roasted tea leaves from the highlands of Indonesia, particularly from around Bandung in Java as well as West Sumatra around Bukit Tinggi since the Dutch colonial era. | 3
Clove in cigarettes but not Tea? | 4
In Surabaya the favourite thirst quencher is teh manis, sweet tea, black tea with sugar. In VN a lot of gree and jasmine tea are drunk. Often there's a pot of week tea on restaurant tables for free consumption. No idea about the Phills. | 5
thanks, keep it coming! | 6
#4.Clove as well as cardamon flavoured tea with milk is quite popular with some of the ethnic South Asian and Middle Eastern communities who have settled down in some parts of Jakatar years ago. | 7
I adore tea almost as much as I adore wine, OP. But I am confused by your (to me) ramblings. If ye refine yer questions, I'll do my best to answer them. Tony | 8

#9, you didn't see any iced tea? AFAIk there is lots of bottled ice tea sold in the Philippines. | 10
That you find everywhere. Not sure you can consider it tea though, that's why I didn't mention the stuff. You get it in lots of flavours too. In Cambodia I can get Nestle Ice Tea in powder format, BTW ;) | 11
Vietnam has some lovely artichoke tea (it has a surprisingly chocolatey taste to it). Green or lotus tea (with lots of ice) is also served in many places, no matter what you order, even a coffee. The favourite bottled iced tea appears to be a sweetened lemon green tea. | 12
