Hello, I'm going to be volunteering in Zanzibar this summer and was wondering how to go about obtaining a volunteer visa for less than 3 months. I've looked on the embassy website and they are very vague about how to go about getting a volunteer visa. Any advice would be much appreciated
I did not actually volunteer. But you do need some permit and work visa. The cost of those is pretty steep (400 USD+). All the papers you can arrange after arrival to Tanzania. If there is no Embassy,... at your country you can obtain tourist visa on entry to the country (not at all border crossings, but all you would be using anyway) and arrange other permits afterwards. | 1
In addition to the regular tourist visa, you need what is called a CTA permit (Carrying On Temporary Assignment Permit), as volunteering is not allowed on a tourist visa. Usually the NGO you are volunteering with handles all the paperwork for getting the CTA for volunteers, so you should ask them. I do not know what country you are from, but for USA citizens, the tourist visa is $100 for one year (allows multiple entry, with a maximum length of one stay of 90 days), and then the cost of the CTA is on top of that. Talk to your NGO for specifics. | 2
