| chris030403:10 UTC06 Apr 2007 | Ok ok people, I'm having real difficulties working out what to do whilst im in Tamil Nadu. I know you've answered this question in parts, for which i'm very grateful, but putting it all together is a completely different task! Heres the thing:
I want to visit Madurai, Pondicherry, Mamallapuram and eventually end up in Chennai because I have to fly back to Mumbai. I reach Madurai on the 9th September(monday) from Mysore and wish to stay no longer than the end of the 10th september or early morning on the 11th. I need to be in Chennai for the afternoon of the 15th having visited all the places I mentioned above. I do, at some point, want to travel down the East Coast Road and if time permits visit some other places inbetween if at all possible (maybe gingee, chidambaram, thanjavur, trichy etc.). I prefer travelling by train, but i realise that bus travel can be the only option sometimes, and if taxi/car is cheap, i'm open to suggestions!!
Can anyone help me? I thought of several ways of doing it but cant seem to connect them all in a way that works!!
Thanks in advance, Chris.

| newislander08:14 UTC06 Apr 2007 | Not that i can help you (because i don't know the area firsthand) but i don't get it: you have about 4 days to travel between Madurai and Chennai and already have three places to stop off and visit on your list. I am not even sure you have much time available for other stops unless an hour or two is all you need.

Most of it can be done by train: Madurai - Trichy -Thanjavur - Kumbakonam (worth a stop) - Vriddhachalam then bus to Chidambaram, bus to Pondicherry (I would give this a miss) bus to Mamallapuram or train to Chengelpattu then bus, bus back to Chennai...

Sorry, none of this makes any sense, given that you have 4 days. You seem to be making plans without any awareness of how much time it takes to get around Tamil Nadu.
The only remotely feasible possibility is to travel by train (NO STOPOVERS) as close as possible to Pondy, then to Mamallapuram by bus, and on to Chennai by bus. Maybe an overnight train to save yourself some time.
